A 50‑year‑old farmer, Shambhu Baiga, died on Sunday in Rožin village, Umaria district, after a broken overhead line fell onto his field while he was applying fertilizer.
Umaria district authorities reported that Shambhu Baiga, a 50‑year‑old farmer from Rožin village in Chandia tehsil, was killed on Sunday morning while spreading fertilizer in his field. A high‑voltage power line, which had broken, fell onto the cultivated area, delivering a lethal electric shock.
Police arrived at the scene, recovered the farmer's body and have taken it into custody for a post‑mortem examination. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the line failure and to assess any negligence on the part of the electricity provider.
Local officials have warned residents in the vicinity of overhead lines to maintain a safe distance and to report any damaged infrastructure promptly. The incident underscores the hazards associated with unattended power lines in rural agricultural zones.
