Farmers Block Road Over Water Shortage: Farmers Set Deadline for Officials!

Protest Demands Adequate Water Supply to Distributary Canals 16, 17 and 18 of the Narayanpur Right Bank Canal | Farmers Warn of Fresh Agitation if Assurance Is Not Fulfilled by Tuesday

NEED 24 NEWS

Devadurga: Farmers who had been protesting for the past 15 days against the inadequate supply of water to distributary canals 16, 17 and 18 of the Narayanpur Right Bank Canal staged a road blockade on Saturday, expressing anger over the alleged negligence of officials. They temporarily withdrew their protest after the authorities assured them that adequate water would be supplied.

Led by the District President of the Karnataka State Farmers' Association, the farmers blocked the Devadurga–Gattur main road near the 17th distributary canal at Basavanna Camp, close to Sunakeshwarhal village. They protested against the failure to supply water to agricultural fields located at the tail end of the canal.

Farmers Worried as Crops Face Water Shortage

Farmers at the tail end of the canal are worried that their crops may dry up due to the inadequate supply of water. The protesters alleged that despite submitting several appeals and continuing their agitation for days, officials of the Irrigation Department, the district administration and the government had failed to resolve the issue.

Irrigation Department Executive Engineer Manjunath Halager and the Assistant Executive Engineer visited the protest site. Following discussions with the farmers, the officials contacted the Superintending Engineer over the phone and informed them that the water discharge had been increased from the existing 2,400 cusecs to 2,750 cusecs.

The officials also assured the farmers that adequate water would reach the tail-end agricultural fields by maintaining the prescribed gauge from 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Following this assurance, the farmers decided to temporarily withdraw their protest.

Farmers Warn of Fierce Agitation if Assurance Fails

The farmers warned that if adequate water was not supplied with the prescribed gauge by 10 a.m. on Tuesday, as promised by the officials, they would return to the streets and launch a more intense agitation.

Prabhakar Patil, Ingaladal Ramesh, Sharanappa, Ummanna Nayak of Huseinpur, Mallappagouda, Mallappa Pujari, Huchchapir Sab and Sharabanna Sahukar were among those who participated in the protest.

Farmers and residents from Ingaladal, Budinal, Haddinal, Sunakeshwarhal, Jinnapur, Koodligi, Gattur, Maladakal and surrounding villages also took part in the agitation.

Gattur Police Inspector was present at the protest site.
