Ensuring Children's Safety Is the Government's Responsibility: Alam Gabbur Urges

Every Child Deserves Insurance Protection to Secure Their Future

Need 24 News

Raichur, October 23: Social activist and journalist Alam Gabbur has urged the Karnataka State Government to introduce a comprehensive life insurance scheme for all students studying in government and private schools across the state to provide financial security and protection for children, who represent the future of the nation.

Children are the nation's most valuable asset. Protecting their education, health, safety, and future is the responsibility of the government, school managements, and society. However, when unexpected accidents, tragedies, or other unforeseen incidents threaten children's lives, their families may face not only emotional distress but also severe financial difficulties. Therefore, it is essential to strengthen financial assistance mechanisms for families affected by such unfortunate incidents, he said.

Every Child Should Receive Insurance Protection

The safety of school-going children is a major concern for parents. From the time children leave home for school until they return, they may face various safety challenges. Unexpected incidents can occur on school premises, during sports activities, educational trips, and transportation.

In this regard, the state government should introduce a special insurance scheme for students. Under the scheme, eligible students should receive insurance coverage, and their families should be provided with a predetermined insurance amount in the event of accidental death, Alam Gabbur demanded.

No child should be deprived of insurance protection due to financial difficulties. In particular, the government should bear the insurance premium for children from economically weaker sections, agricultural labourers' families, daily-wage workers' families, and other disadvantaged communities, he said.

Financial Security Is Essential for Poor Families

In rural areas, many families work hard to provide education for their children. If an unexpected tragedy strikes such a family, its consequences can affect the entire household.

A dedicated insurance scheme for schoolchildren could provide financial assistance to families during such difficult circumstances. However, insurance cannot prevent the loss of life; it can only help reduce the financial hardship faced by families after such an unfortunate event.

Therefore, alongside introducing an insurance scheme, the government should strengthen safety measures in schools, create awareness about road safety among children, provide first-aid facilities, and train teachers to respond effectively to emergencies.

Key Demands Placed Before the Government

Alam Gabbur has urged the government to consider the following measures in the interest of students:

Comprehensive Student Insurance Scheme: Provide insurance coverage to eligible students studying in government and private schools.

Government Payment of Insurance Premiums: The government should bear the insurance costs for children from economically disadvantaged families.

Compensation for Accidental Death: Provide a predetermined compensation amount to the family in the event of a student's accidental death, subject to the terms and conditions of the insurance policy.

Insurance Assistance for Disability: Provide financial assistance to students who suffer permanent disabilities due to accidental injuries, in accordance with the insurance policy's conditions.

Simple Registration Process: Establish an easy registration system through schools using students' existing records.

Transparent Compensation Process: Ensure that affected families receive compensation within a stipulated period with minimal documentation and without unnecessary delays.

Regular School Safety Inspections: Conduct periodic inspections of school buildings, playgrounds, school transport vehicles, and safety arrangements for educational trips.

Clear Policy Framework Needed Before Implementation

Before introducing an insurance scheme for students, the government should clearly define its coverage, insurance amount, premium payment arrangements, eligibility criteria, claim procedures, and grievance redressal mechanism.

The government should also review the insurance benefits and assistance schemes already available to students and identify any gaps in existing provisions. This would help coordinate the proposed scheme with current programmes and ensure effective additional protection for eligible students.

Furthermore, the responsibilities of insurance companies and the government's supervisory role should be clearly established. An effective implementation mechanism must be developed to ensure that the benefits reach families who genuinely need assistance.

Children's Safety Is Not Just the Parents' Responsibility

Children's safety should not be considered solely the responsibility of parents. The government, Education Department, school managements, and society must work together to protect children and ensure their well-being.

The introduction of a student life insurance scheme could provide financial assistance to families facing hardship following unexpected tragedies. At the same time, equal importance must be given to child safety awareness, improvements in school infrastructure, and the availability of emergency medical assistance.

Alam Gabbur's Appeal to the Government

"Children are the future of our nation. Ensuring their safety is a collective responsibility of society. The government should introduce a special scheme to ensure that every child receives insurance protection. Free insurance facilities should be provided to children from economically weaker families so that their families do not face overwhelming financial difficulties following unforeseen tragedies. The government must give greater priority to children's safety and future," Alam Gabbur urged.

He appealed to the state government to consider this demand seriously and formulate a practical and comprehensive insurance scheme to provide protection to schoolchildren across Karnataka.
