An elderly person in Thane was swindled of Rs 1.29 crore through an online fraud, prompting a police investigation.

A senior citizen in Thane, Maharashtra, fell victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud that siphoned off approximately Rs 1.29 crore from the victim's accounts. The incident was reported to local authorities after the victim discovered unauthorized transactions linked to a series of online communications.

The Thane police have lodged a First Information Report and handed the case over to the cyber crime cell, which is now tracing digital footprints, IP addresses and bank records to identify the perpetrators. Investigators have also issued alerts urging residents to be cautious of unsolicited calls and messages that request personal or financial details.

Earlier this month, a suspect identified as Arun Farera was taken into custody in connection with the scam. However, the Bombay High Court later ruled that his arrest was illegal, ordering his release while the probe continues. The court’s decision does not absolve the alleged involvement but underscores procedural lapses in the arrest process.

Authorities have assured the public that the investigation remains active and have promised to keep the victim informed of any developments. They have also recommended that senior citizens seek assistance from trusted family members or legal advisors when dealing with digital financial transactions.
