With families away, senior citizens in old age homes are observing Diwali by themselves, lighting lamps and awaiting loved ones' return.

Delhi-based reports indicate that many senior citizens residing in old age homes are spending Diwali without the company of their families. The traditional festival of lights, usually marked by gatherings and shared meals, is being observed in a subdued manner as the elderly light diyas and pray for the return of their loved ones.

Staff at several homes have arranged modest decorations and simple sweets, but the atmosphere remains quiet, reflecting the loneliness felt by many residents. Volunteers and caretakers are providing companionship, yet the absence of family members is palpable.

Social workers highlight that the situation underscores the need for greater community outreach during festivals, urging families and neighbours to reach out to elderly relatives living in care facilities.

The homes plan to organize small cultural programs later in the week, hoping to bring some cheer to the seniors while they continue to await reunions with their families.

Authorities are being asked to consider special support measures for senior citizens during major festivals, ensuring they are not left isolated during times of celebration.
