A charging station for electric buses has been opened in Purnia, marking the first step in Bihar’s plan to set up charging infrastructure across five divisions by the end of November.

Purnia witnessed the inauguration of its first electric‑bus charging station on Tuesday, a move aimed at bolstering the state's green public‑transport agenda. The facility, located near the city’s main bus depot, is equipped to service multiple e‑buses simultaneously and is expected to reduce reliance on diesel fleets.
The Bihar government has outlined a broader rollout, targeting the installation of similar charging hubs in Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur. Officials have set a deadline of late November to complete the work in these five divisions, creating a contiguous network for electric buses across the state.
State Transport Minister highlighted that the network will cut operational costs for bus operators and lower urban pollution levels. The project is being funded through a combination of state resources and central clean‑energy schemes, with plans to expand the capacity of each station as the e‑bus fleet grows.
Local commuters expressed optimism, noting that reliable charging infrastructure is essential for the seamless functioning of electric buses. The Purnia station will initially serve routes within the district before integrating with inter‑city services.
The initiative aligns with India’s national push toward electrified public transport, positioning Bihar as a proactive participant in the transition to sustainable mobility.
