The National Green Tribunal has directed immediate remedial measures after tests revealed E. coli contamination in water drawn from 50 borewells across Indore.

Indore authorities reported that laboratory analysis of water samples from fifty borewells across the city showed the presence of E. coli bacteria, a clear indicator of fecal contamination. The findings were disclosed by the city's water department following routine quality checks conducted in early October.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), acting on the report, issued a notice to the Indore Municipal Corporation demanding immediate corrective action, including disinfection of the affected borewells and provision of safe drinking water to residents. The tribunal also ordered a comprehensive audit of all water sources in the city to prevent recurrence.

Health officials warned that consumption of contaminated water can lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, especially among children and the elderly. They have advised households to boil water or use certified filters until the issue is resolved.

The municipal corporation has pledged to deploy mobile water purification units in the most affected neighborhoods and to accelerate the rollout of its ongoing piped water supply project, which aims to replace reliance on borewells with treated municipal water.

The incident underscores growing concerns over urban water safety in rapidly expanding Indian cities, prompting calls for stricter monitoring and infrastructure upgrades.
