Driver and Cleaner of Cement Truck Recovered After Falling into Damoh River

Two bodies were retrieved 24 hours after an 18‑wheel cement‑laden truck plunged into the river near Cheelghat bridge on the Damoh‑Katni highway.
An 18‑wheel truck loaded with cement lost control and fell into a river on the Damoh‑Katni State Highway near the Cheelghat bridge on Monday. The vehicle, weighing several tonnes, sank in water that was reported to be about 40 feet deep.
Rescue teams from the district administration and local police arrived promptly, but the strong current and depth hampered immediate recovery. After a thorough search lasting roughly 24 hours, divers were able to retrieve the bodies of the driver and the cleaner from the submerged truck.
Authorities have opened an inquiry to determine the cause of the accident, focusing on road conditions, vehicle maintenance and driver fatigue. The incident underscores the hazards faced by heavy‑load transport on rural highways during the monsoon season.
The recovered bodies have been handed over to the families, and a formal funeral arrangement is being coordinated by local officials. No other injuries were reported.
