The Defence Research and Development Organisation and University of Hyderabad scientists have jointly created a next‑generation solid rocket propellant, aiming to boost India’s launch capabilities.

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has partnered with researchers from the University of Hyderabad to develop a new class of solid rocket propellant. The fuel formulation incorporates advanced composite binders and high‑energy oxidisers, promising greater thrust and a lower environmental footprint compared with existing propellants.
The collaborative effort is part of India’s broader push for self‑reliance in space and defence technologies. Initial bench‑scale tests have shown the propellant delivering higher specific impulse, a key metric for rocket efficiency, while maintaining safety standards required for launch operations.
The prototype is slated for further validation in upcoming launch vehicle trials, with the aim of integrating the material into future Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) missions and defence missile systems. Successful deployment could reduce dependence on imported propellant technologies and strengthen indigenous capabilities.
Both DRDO and the University of Hyderabad have indicated plans to continue refining the formulation, focusing on scalability and cost‑effectiveness for mass production.
The development underscores the growing synergy between India’s defence research establishments and academic institutions in driving cutting‑edge aerospace innovations.
