The Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh received 42% less rain this season compared with the same period last year, prompting officials to warn of worsening water scarcity.
The meteorological office reported that Dhar recorded only 42% of the rainfall received during the same timeframe last year, marking a sharp decline in monsoon performance for the district. This shortfall was confirmed by data collected from rain gauges across the region and released by the Free Press Journal.
Local water authorities said the reduced precipitation is already affecting reservoir levels, with several tanks and wells showing lower than normal water tables. Farmers in the district, who depend heavily on monsoon rains for sowing kharif crops, are facing the prospect of reduced yields and may have to rely on costly irrigation.
The state government has urged districts to implement water conservation measures, including rainwater harvesting and stricter regulation of groundwater extraction. Officials also warned that if the trend continues, the region could experience acute water shortages during the upcoming dry months.
