Delhi University Faces Hostel Crisis: 700,000 Students, Only 7,000 Rooms

Delhi University’s hostel capacity covers just a fraction of its student population, leaving hundreds of thousands of students to seek private accommodation.
Delhi University, one of India’s largest universities, enrolls over 700,000 students across its constituent colleges.
Despite this massive student body, the university’s on‑campus hostel network provides only about 7,000 rooms, meaning roughly one per cent of the student population can live on campus.
The shortfall forces many students to rent private PGs or flats, often far from campus, adding to their monthly expenses and extending commute times.
University officials have announced plans to expand hostel capacity, but funding and land‑acquisition hurdles have slowed progress.
