During a march opposing the electoral roll's SIR in Delhi, police arrested several demonstrators, citing law and order concerns.
Delhi police intervened in a demonstration organized to protest the inclusion of an SIR (Special Incremental Revision) in the voter list. The march, which gathered a sizable crowd in the capital, was halted after authorities deemed the gathering to be violating public order norms.
According to police officials, a number of participants attempted to breach a cordoned area near a government office, prompting officers to use standard procedures to disperse the crowd. Several protesters were subsequently taken into custody for alleged violations of the Delhi Police Act and for obstructing police duties.
The police have not disclosed the exact number of arrests, but eyewitnesses reported that dozens were detained and transported to nearby police stations for questioning. No injuries were reported on either side, and the march was called off following the arrests.
Authorities emphasized that the right to peaceful protest is respected, but warned that any attempt to disrupt public peace would be dealt with strictly. The incident underscores growing tensions over electoral roll revisions ahead of upcoming elections.
