The Delhi administration is reportedly pushing for the introduction of alcohol sales in Ladakh, a move that local leader Wangchuk said makes Gujarat a dry state.

Kashmir Media Service quoted local figure Wangchuk as saying that the Delhi government is actively promoting the sale of alcoholic beverages in the Union Territory of Ladakh. He added that this policy shift effectively renders Gujarat a dry state, highlighting the contrast between the two regions.
Ladakh, which became a separate Union Territory after the 2019 reorganisation, has traditionally maintained strict controls on the availability of alcohol. The proposed change would mark a significant departure from the existing regulatory framework that limits retail sale and consumption.
The announcement has sparked debate among policymakers and residents. Supporters argue that regulated alcohol sales could generate revenue and reduce illicit trade, while opponents fear social repercussions and a dilution of Ladakh's cultural norms.
Wangchuk's comment also underscores the political symbolism of the move, juxtaposing Ladakh's emerging policy with Gujarat's long‑standing prohibition on alcohol. The statement reflects broader discussions about state‑level autonomy and central government influence over local regulations.
No official response from the Delhi administration has been released at the time of reporting, and the proposal remains under consideration pending further deliberation.
