As firecrackers dominate Diwali celebrations, officials warn that the week following the festival will test Delhi's air quality and public health systems.

Delhi is preparing for a sharp rise in air pollution in the week after Diwali, as the cumulative effect of firecracker emissions, vehicular traffic and seasonal weather patterns converge. The National Centre for Disease Control has flagged the period as a potential public‑health crisis, citing past data that shows a spike in respiratory ailments during this window.

Meteorological agencies predict stagnant air masses and low wind speeds, conditions that trap fine particulate matter (PM2.5) close to the ground. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has already issued advisories for vulnerable groups, urging hospitals to ready emergency services and for citizens to limit outdoor activities.

Authorities are also deploying additional air‑monitoring stations across the city to provide real‑time data. While the festive season draws attention to fireworks, officials stress that the lingering haze poses a far greater risk to the population's health than the celebrations themselves.

Public health experts recommend wearing N95 masks, using air purifiers indoors, and staying hydrated. The coming week will serve as a litmus test for the city's preparedness to handle pollution spikes linked to cultural events.

The situation underscores the need for longer‑term strategies, including stricter firecracker regulations and greener transport solutions, to mitigate future health emergencies.
