India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh officially launched the newly built fleet support vessel Surya, enhancing the Navy’s logistical capabilities.
On 7 October, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the commissioning ceremony of the fleet support ship Surya. The vessel, designed to provide logistical and replenishment services to Indian naval fleets, was handed over to the Navy at a naval shipyard. Senior naval officers and officials from the Ministry of Defence attended the event, highlighting the strategic importance of the new asset.
Surya is expected to augment the Indian Navy’s operational endurance by delivering fuel, provisions, and spare parts to warships at sea, thereby reducing turnaround time during deployments. The launch aligns with the government’s broader push to modernise maritime capabilities and strengthen blue‑water operations.
The ceremony also underscored the ongoing collaboration between Indian shipyards and defence agencies to indigenously build support platforms. With Surya now entering service, the Navy gains an additional force multiplier to sustain its growing fleet across the Indian Ocean Region.
