Dalit Sangharsha Samiti Demands Special Law to Curb Atrocities Against Dalits in Raichur District

NEED 24 NEWS

Devadurga, November 2: The Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (Regd.), State Committee founded by Mahatma Prof. B. Krishnappa, has urged the state government to introduce a special law to prevent atrocities against Dalits in Raichur district. The committee has also demanded strict implementation of existing laws in view of the increasing incidents of assaults, sexual violence, murders and social discrimination against Dalits across various taluks of the district.

In this regard, representatives of the committee submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Tahsildar of Devadurga on Monday.

The memorandum highlighted several incidents reported from different parts of Raichur district. According to the committee, a Dalit youth was brutally murdered with deadly weapons in Haddinhal village of Devadurga taluk. The committee alleged that the prime accused, Bhimaraya Haddinhal, has not yet been arrested.

The memorandum also referred to the alleged abduction, gang rape and murder of Ashwini, a 21-year-old Dalit graduate from Hokkane village in Sirwar taluk. Her body was reportedly thrown into a well.

Similarly, the committee alleged that Rannamma of Karadakal village in Lingasugur taluk was subjected to sexual assault and rape before being murdered on August 19.

In another incident, Dalits were allegedly subjected to a brutal assault during a Rathotsava (temple chariot festival) at Tidigol village in Sindhanur taluk due to caste discrimination. The injured victims are currently undergoing treatment in hospital, the committee stated.

The committee also raised serious concerns over the alleged practice of untouchability in Echanal village of Lingasugur taluk, where Dalit customers are reportedly denied water in separate glasses and are instead made to receive water poured from a distance.

Major Demands of the Committee

The committee has demanded a speedy investigation into all cases of assault, rape, murder and social discrimination against Dalits in Raichur district and strict punishment for those found guilty.

It has also urged the government to ensure the effective implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and take disciplinary action against officials who encourage untouchability or neglect their official responsibilities.

Furthermore, the committee has demanded that the Bhumananda murder case be treated seriously, that charge sheets be filed against all accused persons and that the trial be conducted through a fast-track court to ensure strict punishment for the guilty.

The committee pointed out that although Article 17 of the Constitution of India abolishes untouchability, such discriminatory practices continue to prevail in rural areas, which is a matter of serious concern.

It urged the state government to act immediately and introduce permanent and effective measures to protect Dalits and prevent atrocities against them.

On this occasion, State Organising Convenor Shivappa Palakanamaradi, Devadurga Taluk Convenor Ramesh Bhavimani, Arakera Taluk Convenor Ramappa Mestry, Taluk Organising Convenors Eshappa Shivangi, David Masarkal, Rangappa Togari, Siddappa Janakal Palakanamaradi, Ramesh Bhovi Gejjebavi, Durugesh, Viresh Beri, Ramesh Hirebudur, Adappa Myakaladoddi, Siddappa Budinal, Sangamesh Lingadahalli, Gafur Gaurapete, Ramesh Hejjari, Mounesh Kakkaladoddi, Mounesh Gandhi, Raju Tavag and hundreds of Dalit Sangharsha Samiti activists participated.
