An online offer to download a movie for one rupee led to a fraud that drained ₹89,000 from a victim's bank account in Madhya Pradesh.
A resident of Madhya Pradesh was enticed by an internet advertisement claiming a film could be downloaded for just one rupee. After following the link, the individual entered banking details, after which ₹89,000 was transferred out of the account.
Cyber‑crime investigators say the scheme used a phishing page that mimicked a legitimate payment gateway, capturing the victim's credentials and authorising the transfer. The loss was reported to the local police, who have opened a case under the Information Technology Act.
Authorities have warned the public to verify the authenticity of low‑cost digital offers and to avoid sharing banking information on untrusted websites. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are urging anyone who received similar messages to come forward.
The incident highlights the growing prevalence of online frauds that exploit the lure of cheap entertainment, prompting calls for greater digital literacy and stricter monitoring of e‑commerce platforms.
