A consumer tribunal has directed Indian Railways and IRCTC to compensate a passenger ₹15,620 after he missed his train despite arriving at the station on time.
The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ruled that Indian Railways and its online ticketing arm IRCTC must pay a compensation of ₹15,620 to a passenger who missed his scheduled train despite reaching the departure station within the stipulated time.
The passenger filed a complaint alleging that inadequate assistance and misleading information at the station caused him to lose the train, even though he was present well before the boarding deadline.
The commission held that the railway authorities have a duty to ensure smooth boarding procedures and that failure to do so amounts to negligence, warranting monetary relief to the aggrieved traveler.
Railways and IRCTC have been instructed to settle the amount within the timeframe prescribed by the commission, failing which further legal action may be pursued.
The decision underscores growing consumer scrutiny of public transport services and reinforces accountability mechanisms for service providers in India.
