During the nomination scrutiny for the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha by‑election, the Election Commission rejected the candidature of the Congress‑supported nominee, while the BJP’s Hardip Singh Puri faced objections from opposition parties.
The returning officer overseeing the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha by‑poll has disqualified the nomination of a candidate backed by the Indian National Congress. The decision was taken after the standard scrutiny of nomination papers, a routine step before the election schedule proceeds.
In the same scrutiny, the nominations of two independent aspirants were also struck off, reducing the final list of contenders.
Opposition parties, citing procedural irregularities, lodged a formal objection to the paperwork submitted by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate, Hardip Singh Puri. The returning officer has asked the parties to submit their responses by 5 p.m., after which a final ruling will be announced.
The developments come as the Rajya Sabha seat, vacated earlier this year, draws heightened political attention, with both major parties keen to secure the upper‑house position from the central Indian state.
