CIL, HURL Forge Pact to Develop Syngas‑Based Urea Plant in Jharkhand

Coal India Limited (CIL) and Hindustan Unilever Limited (HURL) entered into a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday to investigate the viability of a syngas‑based urea plant in the state of Jharkhand. The collaboration aims to harness coal‑derived syngas as a cleaner feedstock for urea synthesis, potentially reducing the environmental footprint of fertilizer production.

Under the pact, both companies will conduct a detailed technical and financial feasibility study, with the goal of identifying a suitable site and securing necessary approvals. The project is expected to tap into CIL’s extensive coal resources and HURL’s expertise in chemical manufacturing.

If successful, the plant could provide a steady supply of urea to the domestic market while promoting the use of renewable syngas, aligning with India’s broader goals of sustainable industrial development.

The parties have agreed to share data and expertise throughout the study phase, with a view to finalizing a joint venture structure should the feasibility assessment prove positive.
