The chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir conducted a field review of the state's major highway and tunnel programmes, which together carry an estimated outlay of close to ₹40,000 crore. The inspection covered several ongoing stretches of road and newly built tunnels that are part of the government's push to improve all-weather connectivity in the mountainous region.
Officials said the projects are designed to cut travel time between key districts, facilitate trade and tourism, and strengthen strategic mobility along the border areas. The combined investment reflects both state and central funding aimed at modernising the region's transport infrastructure.
During the review, senior engineers and project managers briefed the chief secretary on progress, challenges posed by difficult terrain and harsh weather, and measures being taken to ensure quality and safety standards. They reiterated a commitment to meet the scheduled completion dates, noting that timely delivery is crucial for the economic uplift of local communities.
The administration highlighted that the enhanced road network is expected to generate employment, attract private investment and improve access to health and education services across remote parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
