The Chief Justice of India highlighted the disparity between the detention of political leaders and the recent relief granted to a convicted murderer in Uttar Pradesh.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) used a recent court hearing to draw attention to what he described as an uneven application of justice. While several opposition leaders remain in custody on charges that have drawn nationwide debate, a convicted murderer from Uttar Pradesh received a court-ordered relief earlier this week.

The Uttar Pradesh case involved a person found guilty of murder who was granted relief by a lower court, citing procedural lapses and a reassessment of evidence. The decision has sparked discussion about consistency in the criminal justice system, especially given the high-profile nature of the political detentions.

Speaking from the bench, the CJI remarked that the rule of law must be applied uniformly, irrespective of a person's political standing or the nature of the crime. He urged the judiciary and law‑enforcement agencies to ensure that no individual is treated preferentially, whether a political leader or a convicted offender.

Legal experts noted that the CJI’s comments could intensify scrutiny of both the political detentions and the Uttar Pradesh relief order, potentially prompting reviews of procedural safeguards across the board.
