Chief Justice inspects NIT Sikkim site for permanent law university campus

The Chief Justice of India paid a site visit to the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Sikkim in Ravangla, South Sikkim, to assess its suitability for a permanent law university campus. The inspection forms part of a broader government initiative to expand specialised legal education across the country.
During the visit, the Chief Justice toured the available land, reviewed preliminary layouts and discussed the project timeline with senior officials from the Ministry of Education and the NIT administration. He emphasized the need for a state‑of‑the‑art facility that can cater to both undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes.
Authorities said the chosen site offers ample space for academic blocks, hostels, a moot court and research centres, aligning with the standards set for national law schools. The visit is expected to accelerate the approval process and pave the way for construction to begin later this year.
The project, still in its planning stage, aims to address the shortage of quality legal institutions in the North‑East region and provide local students with greater access to professional legal education.
Stakeholders anticipate that the new campus will also attract faculty and scholars from across India, enhancing the region's academic profile.
