The Chief Justice of India inaugurated a new bench of the High Court in Leh, marking the first permanent judicial facility for Ladakh. Lieutenant Governor described the event as a historic milestone for the Union Territory.
New Delhi – The Chief Justice of India (CJI) formally opened the Ladakh bench of the High Court in Leh on Monday, providing the Union Territory with its first permanent high‑court facility. The ceremony was attended by senior judges, Union Territory officials and local dignitaries. In his address, the CJI highlighted the importance of accessible justice for the remote region and pledged swift operationalisation of the bench.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, serving as the Union Territory’s administrative head, called the inauguration a "historic milestone" for Ladakh’s legal infrastructure. He underscored that the new bench will reduce the need for litigants to travel long distances to other high courts, thereby enhancing the delivery of justice.
The newly inaugurated bench will initially handle civil and criminal matters arising within Ladakh, with provisions to expand its jurisdiction as case loads increase. Officials indicated that the bench will be fully functional within weeks, with staff and judges already appointed.
The event reflects the central government's ongoing efforts to strengthen judicial presence in remote and strategically important regions of the country.
