The Chhattisgarh government announced plans to designate its first official state butterfly, a move aimed at boosting wildlife awareness and conservation.
The state administration of Chhattisgarh has formally proposed the adoption of its inaugural state butterfly, a symbolic step intended to highlight the region's rich lepidopteran diversity. Officials from the Forest Department said the move is part of a broader effort to promote biodiversity education and eco‑tourism across the state.
While the exact species has not yet been disclosed, the department indicated that the chosen butterfly will be native to Chhattisgarh's forested habitats and will serve as an ambassador for conservation initiatives. The proposal is expected to be reviewed by the state cabinet in the coming weeks before an official declaration is made.
Environmental groups welcomed the announcement, noting that a state butterfly can help focus public attention on habitat protection and the threats faced by pollinators. If approved, Chhattisgarh will join a handful of Indian states that have already identified official animal symbols, thereby strengthening its commitment to preserving local flora and fauna.
