Chhattisgarh's prisons are housing almost 23,000 inmates despite being built for only 15,000, prompting the state High Court to review the overcrowding situation. The court has directed authorities to present a plan to decongest the facilities.

According to recent data, the state’s correctional facilities currently accommodate about 22,800 prisoners, far exceeding the sanctioned capacity of roughly 15,000. This overcrowding has raised concerns about inmate welfare, hygiene and security within the prisons.

The Chhattisgarh High Court, taking suo motu cognisance of the issue, has asked the prison department and the state government to submit a detailed report on the existing inmate population and the steps being taken to alleviate the pressure. The court emphasized the need for immediate measures such as expediting trials, utilizing open jails and exploring alternative sentencing.

Legal experts warn that prolonged overcrowding can lead to violations of human rights and increase the risk of disease outbreaks. They urge the authorities to consider long‑term reforms including construction of new barracks and modernization of existing infrastructure to meet international standards.
