The Chhattisgarh election authority has launched a dedicated voter registration drive to meet rising demand amid the nationwide controversy over the Systematic Indian Register (SIR).

Chhattisgarh’s State Election Commission announced a focused voter registration drive aimed at enrolling eligible citizens who have missed the regular enrollment window. The initiative, rolled out this week, will operate through mobile booths and temporary centers across districts, targeting both urban and rural areas.

The drive comes as the country grapples with a heated debate over the Systematic Indian Register (SIR), a proposed database that has sparked concerns about privacy and electoral integrity. Officials say the heightened public interest has led to a surge in registration requests, prompting the state to act swiftly.

Authorities have set a three‑month timeline for the special drive, with plans to extend registration hours and deploy additional staff. Voters can register online, via SMS, or in person by presenting valid identity documents at designated centers.

State election officials emphasized that the objective is to ensure that all eligible voters are captured in the electoral roll before the next scheduled elections, thereby strengthening the democratic process.

The commission expects the drive to add several lakh new entries to the voter list, reducing the number of unregistered eligible citizens and addressing concerns raised by the SIR controversy.
