Chhattisgarh hikes PG doctor stipends by up to Rs 34,000 amid junior doctors' protest

The Chhattisgarh government announced an increase of up to Rs 34,000 in postgraduate medical stipends as junior doctors continue their strike over pay and working conditions.
The state administration of Chhattisgarh has approved a raise in the monthly stipend for postgraduate (PG) medical trainees, with the increment ranging up to Rs 34,000. The decision comes as junior doctors across the state have sustained a protest demanding better remuneration and improved working conditions in government hospitals.
Health officials said the revised stipend structure will be implemented from the next financial cycle and will apply to all PG residents currently enrolled in state-run medical colleges and teaching hospitals. The move is intended to address the growing discontent among the junior medical workforce, which has been disrupting routine patient services.
Union representatives of the junior doctors welcomed the announcement but cautioned that further dialogue is needed to resolve other pending issues, such as duty hours and safety measures. The government has urged the striking doctors to return to their duties while the new pay scale is rolled out.
The stipend hike is expected to bring Chhattisgarh's PG doctor remuneration closer to national benchmarks, potentially easing the shortage of specialists in rural and tribal areas.
