The Union government has launched a review of glacier‑lake outburst flood and avalanche preparedness across Himalayan states, with Arunachal Pradesh under special focus.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority, has begun a systematic review of glacier‑lake outburst flood (GLOF) and avalanche preparedness across the Himalayan belt. The exercise aims to assess existing mitigation infrastructure, early‑warning mechanisms and community training programmes.
Arunachal Pradesh, bordering the eastern Himalayas, is identified as a high‑risk zone due to its steep terrain, numerous glacial lakes and frequent snowfall. Officials note that past incidents in the state have highlighted gaps in monitoring and rapid response capabilities.
The review will examine the functionality of river‑gauge stations, satellite‑based lake monitoring, and the deployment of avalanche shelters in vulnerable valleys. State disaster management officials are being asked to submit updated action plans and to conduct joint drills with local communities.
Findings from the assessment are expected to feed into a revised national disaster‑risk reduction strategy, with recommendations to be shared with the state government by the end of the quarter.
