The Union government has cleared the addition of 50 undergraduate seats at Goa’s second government medical college, to be effective from the 2027‑28 academic year.
New Delhi – The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has given its nod to increase the intake capacity of Goa’s second government‑run medical college by 50 seats, starting with the 2027‑28 academic session. The decision, announced through an official circular, marks the first expansion of seat allotment for the institution since its inception.
The additional seats will be allocated to the MBBS programme, addressing the growing demand for medical education in the state. Officials said the move aligns with the central government’s broader objective of strengthening health infrastructure and producing more qualified doctors across India.
State authorities welcomed the clearance, noting that the new seats will help meet local healthcare needs and provide more opportunities for aspiring medical students from Goa and neighbouring regions. Implementation details, including faculty recruitment and facility upgrades, are expected to be finalised in the coming months.
The approval comes as Goa already hosts one government medical college, Goa Medical College in Panaji, and the second institution is part of the state’s plan to expand its higher‑education footprint in the health sector.
