The Union government has cleared an additional 50 MBBS seats for the 2027-28 academic year at the ESIC Hospital in Goa, setting the stage for the state's second government‑run medical college.

New Delhi has given its nod to an extra 50 undergraduate medical seats at the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital in Goa for the 2027‑28 session. The approval, part of the central government's effort to expand medical education capacity, will allow the hospital to admit more students into the MBBS programme.

The move is expected to pave the way for establishing Goa's second government‑run medical college, complementing the existing institution in the state. Officials said the additional seats will be allocated after the necessary infrastructure and faculty requirements are met at the ESIC facility.

State health authorities welcomed the decision, noting that it will help address the shortage of medical professionals in the region and improve healthcare services for the local population.
