The Union government has constituted a panel headed by Ramesh Chand to examine the demands of sugarcane growers in Karnataka and Maharashtra.

New Delhi has announced the formation of a high‑level committee chaired by former civil servant Ramesh Chand to look into the issues raised by sugarcane farmers in the southern states of Karnataka and Maharashtra. The panel is expected to assess the demands submitted by farmer organisations and provide the centre with actionable recommendations.

While the exact composition of the committee has not been disclosed, officials indicated that it will include experts from the agriculture ministry and representatives familiar with the sugarcane sector. The move comes amid growing concerns among growers over the profitability of the crop and the need for policy clarity.

The government has asked the panel to complete its review within a stipulated timeframe and submit a detailed report to the Union Cabinet. Stakeholders have been urged to cooperate fully to ensure that the findings address the core grievances of the farming community.

The establishment of the committee signals the centre’s intent to engage directly with regional agrarian issues and could shape future interventions in the sugarcane value chain across the two states.
