Centennial Chaati Durga Temple Submerged as Ganga Erodes Raghopur Embankment in Bihar

The historic Chaati Durga temple, estimated to be about a century old, was situated on the Raghopur embankment of the Ganga in Nawagachiya, Bihar. Early on, the river’s strong current intensified erosion of the embankment, causing a section to give way and the temple structure to slip into the water.

Local residents reported hearing a loud crash followed by the sight of the shrine disappearing beneath the river. The sudden loss of the religious landmark has sparked fear and confusion among the community, many of whom gathered at the site to witness the incident.

Villagers have expressed anger towards the authorities, accusing them of neglecting the maintenance of the embankment despite repeated warnings of erosion. Calls for immediate action to reinforce the riverbank and to investigate the cause of the collapse have grown louder.

The district administration has yet to release an official statement, but officials are expected to assess the damage and consider measures to prevent further loss of heritage structures along the Ganga’s banks.
