The Maharashtra government will prohibit all cargo trucks from using the Mumbai‑Pune Expressway starting 1 November to ease traffic and enhance safety.

The state government announced that, effective 1 November, all commercial cargo vehicles will be barred from entering the Mumbai‑Pune Expressway. The decision, issued by the Maharashtra Road Development Authority, aims to de‑congest the high‑speed corridor and reduce the risk of accidents involving heavy trucks.
Officials said the ban will apply to trucks exceeding a specified weight limit and to any vehicle carrying freight, regardless of load size. Enforcement will be carried out through electronic monitoring systems and periodic checkpoints along the expressway.
Transporters have been advised to use alternative routes such as the NH-48 and the old Mumbai‑Pune highway for freight movement. The government has promised to review the impact of the restriction after a three‑month period and may consider exemptions for essential services.
The move follows complaints from commuters and logistics firms about frequent slow‑downs and safety concerns on the 95‑kilometre stretch, which handles a large share of the region’s commercial traffic.
