A sinkhole opened on the Old Mahabalipuram Road near Tidel Park in Chennai, causing a passing car to plunge into it.
A sudden ground collapse was reported on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) close to the Tidel Park IT hub in Chennai. The sinkhole, which appeared without warning, swallowed a moving car, leaving the vehicle suspended in the deep cavity.
Emergency services arrived promptly and rescued the driver, who sustained minor injuries and was taken for medical evaluation. Traffic on the busy OMR stretch was diverted, and police cordoned off the area to prevent further incidents.
Preliminary investigations suggest that water seepage and poor drainage may have weakened the road sub‑structure, leading to the collapse. Authorities have launched a detailed survey of the surrounding stretch to assess the extent of damage and to prevent similar occurrences.
The incident has raised concerns among commuters and local businesses about infrastructure safety on the rapidly expanding IT corridor. Officials have assured that remedial work will be expedited and that regular monitoring will be instituted.
No other vehicles or pedestrians were reported injured, and the sinkhole has been temporarily filled while engineers plan a permanent repair.
