Tests by SANDRP reveal elevated levels of a known carcinogen in groundwater surrounding the Kumbh Mela venue in Nashik, raising health concerns for pilgrims and residents.

Environmental watchdog SANDRP has reported that groundwater near the Kumbh Mela site in Nashik contains high concentrations of a toxin linked to cancer. The assessment was carried out as part of routine water quality monitoring ahead of the massive religious gathering.

According to the findings, the contaminant levels exceed the safety thresholds normally applied to drinking water sources, prompting warnings about potential health risks for the influx of pilgrims and nearby residents.

State health officials have been informed and are expected to conduct further testing and advise on mitigation measures, such as providing alternative safe water supplies during the festival.

The Kumbh Mela, which attracts millions of devotees, relies heavily on local water resources for bathing and drinking. Authorities are now reviewing water management plans to ensure that the identified contamination does not compromise public health.

Experts suggest that prolonged exposure to such carcinogenic agents can increase the risk of serious illnesses, underscoring the need for swift remedial action before the event commences.
