Several BJP members, including Harsh Malhotra, were taken into police custody after staging a protest in Delhi against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s recent comment.
Delhi police intervened on Saturday when a group of Bharatiya Janata Party activists gathered outside a central location to voice opposition to remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. The protesters, among them senior leader Harsh Malhotra, carried placards and chanted slogans condemning the comment, which they said was disrespectful to the party's stance.
Law enforcement officials ordered the assembly to disperse, citing concerns over public order. When the demonstrators did not comply, police moved to detain several participants. Harsh Malhotra and a handful of other BJP members were escorted to the nearest police station for questioning and were later placed under judicial custody.
The BJP has not issued an official statement yet, but party sources indicated that the protest was intended to highlight perceived bias in Kharge’s statements. The incident adds to a series of political confrontations in the capital ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
Police spokesperson confirmed that the arrests were made in accordance with the law and that the detained individuals will be released after completing the required procedural formalities, unless further action is deemed necessary.
