BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari charged in Jadavpur over alleged threat to Vande Mataram singers

West Bengal police have filed a charge sheet against BJP MP Suvendu Adhikari for allegedly threatening participants who sang Vande Mataram during a cultural event in Jadavpur.
West Bengal police on Monday lodged a formal charge sheet against BJP MP Suvendu Adhikari in connection with a "threat culture" case in Jadavpur, Kolkata. The filing alleges that the leader threatened individuals who sang the national song Vande Mataram during a local cultural programme.
According to the police report, the incident occurred at a community event where a group of students performed Vande Mataram. Eyewitnesses claim that Adhikari, accompanied by supporters, approached the stage and warned the singers that such performances could invite legal action.
The charge sheet cites sections of the Indian Penal Code related to intimidation and criminal intimidation. In response, Adhikari denied any wrongdoing, describing the allegations as a politically motivated attempt to tarnish his image ahead of upcoming elections.
Both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP have issued statements. The state ruling party called the case an example of misuse of law, while the BJP demanded a fair investigation and warned against media sensationalism.
The case is now slated for hearing in a Kolkata court next week, where the prosecution will present evidence and the defence will have an opportunity to rebut the claims.
