In the recent Panchayati Raj elections in Dungarpur, Rajasthan, a surprise alliance between BJP and Congress was formed, yet the Indian Tribal Party emerged as the largest party, winning 27 seats in the district council.
The Panchayati Raj elections in Dungarpur district of Rajasthan witnessed an unexpected political partnership as the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress announced a joint strategy to contest the district council seats. Analysts described the move as a tactical effort to curb the rise of regional tribal forces that have been gaining ground in the area.
Despite the high‑profile alliance, the Indian Tribal Party (BTP) secured the highest number of seats, emerging as the single largest party with 27 out of the 27 contested seats in the district council. The result underscores the party's strong grassroots support among the tribal population, which appears to have resisted the broader coalition.
Election officials confirmed the final tally, noting that while the BJP‑Congress tie‑up aimed to consolidate votes, it failed to translate into a majority for either national party. The BTP's victory is expected to shape the district's development agenda, particularly in areas of tribal welfare and local infrastructure.
Political observers say the outcome may prompt both the BJP and Congress to reassess their strategies in tribal-dominated constituencies ahead of upcoming state and national polls.
