The Bureau of Indian Standards confiscated 95 gold ornaments in Amritsar after discovering hallmarking violations and warned buyers not to rely solely on the BIS logo or 916 stamp.

Amritsar police, acting on a raid coordinated with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), seized 95 gold jewellery pieces suspected of bearing false or non‑conforming hallmarks. The items were recovered from a local wholesale market where the authorities said the markings did not meet BIS specifications.

BIS officials explained that the irregularities involved incorrect purity stamps and the absence of the mandatory BIS logo, which is intended to assure consumers of genuine 22‑carat gold (916) content. The agency emphasized that a BIS logo or a 916 mark alone does not guarantee compliance if the hallmarking process is flawed.

In a public advisory, BIS urged consumers to verify jewellery through authorized assay labs and to request official BIS certificates before purchase. The seized jewellery will be held for further testing, and legal action may be pursued against the sellers involved.

The enforcement action reflects BIS’s ongoing crackdown on substandard gold products across the country, aiming to protect buyers from fraud and maintain confidence in the Indian jewellery market.
