The Bihar government announced that from the 2026‑27 academic year, primary schools will teach grades one and two in regional languages.
The Bihar education department issued a circular stating that, starting with the 2026‑27 academic session, classes one and two in all state‑run primary schools will be taught in regional languages.
The decision is aimed at strengthening mother‑tongue instruction, which officials say improves comprehension and learning outcomes for young children.
Schools will be required to adopt the language most widely spoken in their locality, such as Maithili, Bhojpuri or Magahi, while continuing to introduce Hindi and English at later grades.
The department has pledged to provide teacher‑training programmes, revised textbooks and supplementary teaching aids to ensure a smooth transition.
The policy aligns with central government recommendations on multilingual education and is expected to be monitored through periodic assessments.
