Authorities in Bihar have opened every gate of the Gandak Barrage after a sudden surge in river flow raised flood warnings, with water levels projected to climb about three metres.
The state’s disaster management team ordered the full opening of all 36 gates at the Gandak Barrage following an unexpected increase in the river’s discharge. Officials said the water level in the Gandak River has risen sharply, prompting the pre‑emptive measure to prevent uncontrolled overflow.
Local districts along the Gandak’s banks have been placed on high alert, with authorities urging residents in low‑lying villages to relocate to safer areas. Relief camps are being readied, and additional police and medical personnel have been deployed to assist any evacuees.
