Rising floodwaters in Bihar have left over 4.3 million people across 14 districts in distress, with relief kitchens feeding thousands daily.
The Ganga, Punpun and several other rivers in Bihar have surged, flooding large swathes of the state and prompting officials to declare a severe flood situation. The inundation now covers 14 districts, putting an estimated 4.36 million residents in immediate need of assistance.
State relief agencies have activated 951 community kitchens to provide cooked meals to affected families. These kitchens operate around the clock, delivering thousands of plates each day to shelters, temporary camps and flood‑hit villages.
Health officials report a noticeable rise in patients presenting with water‑borne illnesses and dehydration, straining district hospitals that are already coping with increased demand for emergency care.
The Bihar government has mobilised additional medical teams, water purification units and distribution trucks to curb the spread of disease and ensure that basic necessities reach the most vulnerable populations.
