The Bihar government has announced the appointment of special public prosecutors to expedite trials of sensitive cases, aiming to reduce delays in the justice system.
Patna, Bihar – The state cabinet approved a new scheme to assign special public prosecutors (PPs) for handling cases deemed sensitive, such as communal incidents, sexual offences and high‑profile crimes. The appointed prosecutors will be empowered to file chargesheets promptly and monitor case progress to ensure that trials are concluded without unnecessary postponements.
The initiative comes in response to growing criticism over prolonged court proceedings that have eroded public confidence in the legal system. By concentrating experienced legal officers on a select docket, the government expects to clear a backlog of pending matters and deliver timely justice.
Officials indicated that the special PPs will work closely with police and the judiciary, receiving regular performance reviews. The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen law‑and‑order mechanisms in Bihar and restore faith in the rule of law.
The scheme will be rolled out in phases, initially covering districts with the highest incidence of sensitive cases, before expanding statewide.
