Bhopal sanitation workers strike halts waste collection ahead of Diwali

Bhopal's municipal sanitation staff began a strike earlier this week, refusing to collect household and commercial waste until their demands are met. The walkout has already affected key commercial zones, including the New Market area, where garbage trucks have not entered for several days. Residents and shop owners report piles of uncollected waste accumulating on streets, creating a visible health and aesthetic issue as the city prepares for Diwali celebrations. The workers have warned that they will continue the stoppage even during the festival if their grievances are not addressed, citing unpaid overtime and inadequate protective equipment. City officials said they are in talks with union representatives and are exploring temporary arrangements, but no definitive timeline for resuming regular collection has been announced.
