Bhopal’s trade community is raising alarms over a pending regulatory move that would levy a 0.4% fee on UPI transactions exceeding Rs 2,000. The proposal, circulated by payment authorities, aims to generate revenue from high‑value digital payments.
Local merchants argue that the additional cost will directly hit businesses that operate on narrow margins, such as small retailers and food vendors. They fear that the fee could force price adjustments or reduce competitiveness in an already price‑sensitive market.
The Bhopal Chamber of Commerce and Industry echoed these concerns, noting that the cumulative impact on low‑margin sectors could be significant. The chamber has called for a review of the fee structure, urging policymakers to consider exemptions or reduced rates for small‑scale traders.
As of now, the fee has not been formally implemented, and stakeholders await further clarification from the central government and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
