BBMP plants thousands of native fruit trees around 15 Bengaluru lakes to boost groundwater
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has launched a large‑scale greening drive, planting native fruit‑bearing saplings around fifteen city lakes to enhance groundwater recharge and improve the environment.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has inaugurated a major greening initiative that will create green belts around lakes across Bengaluru. The drive is aimed at augmenting the city’s underground water reserves and improving overall environmental quality.
Under the scheme, thousands of native fruit‑bearing saplings will be planted around fifteen of the city’s prominent lakes. The selected lakes are considered crucial for groundwater recharge, and the planting of indigenous trees is expected to enhance soil permeability and water retention.
BBMP officials say the green belts will not only help raise groundwater levels but also curb soil erosion, improve air quality and provide residents with locally grown fruit. The initiative aligns with the municipal body’s broader strategy to address water scarcity and urban environmental challenges.
The campaign forms part of a series of measures the city is taking to restore its natural ecosystems, with the hope that the combined effect of lake restoration and tree planting will create a more sustainable urban environment for Bengaluru’s growing population.
