The BBMP has launched a large‑scale green‑belt project to plant thousands of life‑supporting aquatic plants around the city's key lakes, aiming to protect their water‑catchment zones.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated a massive scheme to create a green belt around Bangalore's major lakes by planting thousands of aquatic vegetation that support local biodiversity.

The project targets the water‑catchment areas of these lakes, seeking to enhance water quality, reduce siltation and provide habitat for a wide range of aquatic organisms.

Native, life‑supporting plant species will be introduced around the lake perimeters, forming a protective barrier that helps filter runoff and stabilise the shoreline.

BBMP officials say the initiative aligns with the city's broader sustainability goals and will contribute to the long‑term health of Bangalore's water resources.

Implementation will proceed over the coming months, with regular monitoring to assess the impact on lake ecosystems and surrounding communities.
