Bagmati River Swells in Muzaffarpur, 200+ Families Trapped as Water Rises 1.5m Danger

Heavy rains in Nepal’s Terai have caused the Bagmati River in Muzaffarpur district to surge, with water levels now about 1.5 metres above the danger mark, leaving more than 200 families stranded in low‑lying villages.
Continuous downpours over the Terai region of Nepal have pushed the Bagmati River in Muzaffarpur district to unprecedented levels. The river now stands roughly 1.5 metres above the designated danger mark, flooding the low‑lying hamlets of Katara, Araai and Gayghat. More than two hundred families are reported to be trapped as water inundates homes and access roads.
District authorities have deployed rescue boats and mobile teams to evacuate residents from the worst‑affected zones. Temporary shelters have been set up on higher ground, and relief kits containing food, drinking water and basic medicines are being distributed.
The rising waters have submerged agricultural fields, damaged property and cut off several rural pathways, hampering the movement of emergency supplies. Officials have warned that further rainfall could raise the river level even higher, urging people to remain vigilant and cooperate with rescue operations.
The state disaster management cell is monitoring the situation closely and has appealed for additional support from neighbouring districts to bolster relief efforts.
