Forest officials discovered baby orangutans in an Indian forest area, prompting an immediate investigation into suspected wildlife trafficking. The incident highlights concerns about illegal smuggling of endangered primates across borders.
Officials from the state forest department reported finding two infant orangutans hidden in a dense patch of woodland during a routine patrol. The animals were in poor condition and were immediately transferred to a nearby wildlife care centre for medical attention.
Preliminary examinations indicated that the primates were not native to the region, raising suspicions that they had been brought into the country illegally. Wildlife crime units have been alerted and are coordinating with central agencies to trace the source of the shipment.
Investigators are examining possible links to international smuggling networks that traffic endangered species for the exotic pet trade. No arrests have been made so far, but forensic teams are collecting samples and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby checkpoints.
Conservation groups have urged authorities to strengthen monitoring at borders and increase public awareness about the legal protections afforded to orangutans under international conventions. The case remains under active investigation.
